The Social Dilemma was a documentary about the manipulation of the minds of all the users all around the world. The hidden aspects behind every social media platform were exposed and I now know what these huge social media developers are looking for. I always knew that social media was free for everyone to use I just never knew how these big companies made money. The thought is that the advertisements that I see while scrolling through my feed as the ability to generate so much money for these social media platforms. After learning about the manipulation that goes on in these companies helps me realise how I am being shoved into the same hole that most people who have social media are put in. I do not believe that watching this documentary will take me away from using social media but I believe that it will help me stay a little bit more cautious and limit my time on my phone. I was shocked to learn the number of people and effort it takes to make these complex yet simple-looking social media sites. Overall I believe that the evolution of these social media platforms has brought more bad to this world than good. I agree that social media has brought distant families together and I believe that is a great thing, but the mental effects that these platforms have on individuals are causing more bad than good. The manipulation of an individual is also ethically wrong and I believe that steps should be taken by everyone around the world to not only get rid of this manipulation but to find a proper solution that can benefit companies and the people.
While the documentary was mainly focused on the manipulation of the world through social media, there are also a few aspects of this world that have a lot of mathematical concepts merged in. It is quite clear to see that the amount of users on every social media is increasing daily, it can also be seen as an exponential growth that is growing rapidly as time goes on. Obviously, as people are using these social media platforms there is constant data being taken from every user. This data collection has to then be processed and examined, these processes can be related to a strain of mathematics also known as data management. While collecting this data computers also need to crunch a lot of data by doing calculations to figure out what is going on.
