The Negative Mental State of Gatsby

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

The Great Gatsby was a book that was showcasing the man who never gave up when he was trying to reach a goal in his life. It was clear that Gatsby was a man who had goals in his life and to reach those goals he would do absolutely anything to make it to where he pictured himself. Gatsby loved Daisy and he always pictured himself living a long and loving life with her, but sadly she went and moved along with another man. This drive he shows is consistent and never-ending, but the story has a lot of sadness throughout. Watching Gatsby fail to get Gatsby does show his sadness, but his choice to never give up shows that he is either persistent and never wants to give up, or he is blinded by love and he is unable to see that his love with Daisy would never work out because they are from two different worlds. Gatsby is missing the bigger picture and I believe his sadness is being pushed down by his imagination and his dreams. Nick realized the sadness that Gatsby was experiencing but he did not want to convince Gatsby.

I believe that love is a goal that everyone strives for but the sadness that occurs when it does not work out is so overwhelming that most of us do not want to accept that it is real.

Love is one of the most hard-fought feelings in this world and the sadness that a person can feel when they are deprived of it or have it taken away is quite strong. No one should have the love of a companion taken away from them but there has to be a point where you have to realize that it may not always work out in the way that you want.
